Rimi Baltic is one of the leading and most modern food retail chains in the Baltic region. The company was established as a joint venture between ICA and Kesko Livs in January 2005. In October 2006 ICA and Kesko concluded an agreement whereby ICA acquired Kesko´s 50-percent stakes in Rimi Baltic, which thereby became a wholly owned subsidiary of ICA AB.
ICA and Kesko Livs complement each other in the Baltic states, since Kesko has long been a market leader in Estonia, while ICA’s strongest presence has been in Latvia. The goal of the merger is to achieve strong growth and higher profitability. In the longer term, the company plans to become the region’s market leader within three years, reaching a market share of 25 percent. ICA and Kesko currently have a share of around 15 percent of the Baltic food retail market and Rimi Baltic currently has a total of 164 stores in the Baltic region.
The new company, Rimi Baltic, focuses on three different store formats:
- Rimi Supermarket comprises stores where customers can do their everyday shopping and find a selection of high-quality fresh foods. Rimi Supermarkets are conveniently located in the areas in which their customers live or work.
- Rimi Hypermarket and Rimi Compact Hypermarket comprise hypermarkets that serve as one-stop-shops with advantageous prices. Besides food, they also sell books, multimedia items, clothes, household utensils and sports articles. The stores are easily accessible by car and have generous opening hours. Rimi Compact Hypermarket comprises hypermarkets on a smaller scale.
- Supernetto and Säästumarket are budget stores of a hard discount nature. Säästumarket stores are only found in Estonia, while Supernetto stores are found throughout the Baltic region.
